Link Light Rail: a Love-Hate story.

Link Rail frustrates me a lot.

There’s just something about it that makes me think that it only wants to appeal itself to the white knowledgable recycling middle class of Seattle.

Okay, the majority of Seattle.

Recently, the bus route 42 was changed into route 107. Route 42 went from my neighborhood directly to downtown Seattle, a 45 minute – 1 hour ride. It went along Rainier, turned to Renton Avenue, and then on to Martin Luther King where it would continuously run to join up with Rainier and turn onto Dearborn as it paralleled with Chinatown and ended up in Downtown Seattle. The bus was always busy, filled mainly with minorities considering the path it ran on. It went right by Phuoc Loc Tho (PLT), the Vietnamese-orientated shopping area too.

This is where my criticism of Seattle’s Sound Transit system comes in. Many people I meet o nthe 42 bus are elderly Asians. First generation immigrants, I would assume. They have went  on the 42 bus, like my mom, for years and years and years. It’s routine.

Now that’s changed to the 107 bus which runs from somewhere down in Renton to Rainier and ends there. The idea of this route is to encourage people to use the Link Rail system. I’m fine with walking a block and taking the Light Rail. But I’m more worried about it’ll impact that old lady sitting next to me that keeps asking how to get to PLT and Asian Counseling Referral Service and Chinatown. Their routines are screwed up. If they were me, they’d easily learn to adapt and know that the Link Rail goes directly to the Othello Station and the ID Station.

Did you know the Metro paper transfers work on Link Rail as well? Because I doubt many people know that. The first day my mom and I rode it, there was a security check [surprise!] and we all had to show our tickets. I had the Husky Pass and my mom had a paper transfer. It was all fine and dandy. Using the paper transfers is very convenient because you can bypass the machines.

But that’s all going to end at the end of this year. So after that, my mom will have to navigate the machines and get a “Link Rail Upgrade”. I’ve used those machines and trust me, it’s VERY TEDIOUS. It’s also all in English so what happens to the minorities that now have to switch buses take 3 buses to get to Chinatown. Or walk 2 or 3 blocks so they could get to their bus stop. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WINTER COMES. I’ve complained to Metro bus drivers and they agree and hope that somehow, there will be an interpreter service on those machines that will help the Asian population, especially those who have English as their Second Language or non-English speaking at all.

Link Rail is very convenient indeed. But I just wish that they would do something to coax more people on it because Rainier/MLK is one of the most diverse populations in the WHOLE CITY. Plus, a lot of commuters are those who are older and unable to drive and that’s why they use the bus in the first place. I know that all this is due to budget cutbacks but this sudden [or so it seems] switch-up of bus routes is just too much, too fast.

so it’s my last staying up til 3am night of the summer because why the hell would i stay up til 3am in Seattle. the only reason i stay up late here is because of the blazzzzzin’ wifi so i am able to watch my porn in peace when everyone is sleeping. jk. more like, i talk to shawn.

— speaking of shawn. im a tad bit ticked because he said he would be online to talk to me tonight since it IS my last night of fast webcamming and whatnot which i won’t be able to do in Seattle. but he didn’t show. so i called him via Skype — more on that later — to see what’s up and he’s at a friends house? wtf? i mean, okay. i try not to be the clingy type but maybe i am! did i NOT tell him that i get DIALUP in seattle? gah. i know i’m being pesky but i just really would like to see him for the last time for a while. IM NEEDY. rawh. —-

and then i indulge in my allkpop.com [which i do realize gets news way faster than popseoul. but popseoul gets more cynical and funny and totally biased] and my online shopping and my youtube. bytheway, i stumbled upon this guy on youtube because of the “top watched” videos of the day.

he’s…i don’t know! i mean, he’s clearly faking that accent and he’s just…irritating as “fahk”. but i don’t know why i just had to watch most of his videos! i mean, its like profanity x10. and when i watch it, it’s just like “………o…my…god…what the hell am i watching…” and its just…so…i don’t know! people say you have to be able to laugh at yourself, but he takes that FOB stereotype to the fullest extreme. i cringe watching it but i can’t stop. it’s like that car crash on the freeway that you HAVE to slow down to see everytime and say “wow, i wonder if anyone died” to. okay i don’t know what kind of analogy that was but, all i’m trying to say is that he’s so crude but so freaking ridiculous.

but yes, it’s my last evening, night, whatever in Iowa. im going to miss it but i need to go back to my room im Seattle as well. my vacation here has ending with a in a spray painting daze. i got these rainboots at a garage sale and they fit amazingly but they’re just pink. really really really barbie pink. so i decided to do what any person would do to shoes they don’t like the color of [besides not buy them] — i spray painted them black. though it was more like my brother who spray painted them for me. i just stuck on dots and the paint tape on places that i didn’t want to get black. now they look like some random army boots i got from at trash can. haha, jk. they’re drying so i actually don’t know. we’ll see how they turn out. they were only five dollars so that’s okay if they don’t turn out so great.

i also watched harry potter tonight. overall, i would say it’s an okay movie. i understood what alysonman meant when she said it was boring, then good, then boring, then good. my brother [who has never read any of the books] said he liked it because there was more action. and i must admit, there was more action. the romance was quite stifling though. and what the heck was with the whole ron weasley’s house being burnt down part. err, was that in the book? i mean, what the heck? just adding in random scenes for the hell of it? it felt more like running around for no point. and i was looking forward to all the dueling that was suppose to happen in the castle and the fighting back against the death eaters thing. students against bad guys! i mean, where was all that?!? just harry running around chasing snape down?

— on a very lighter note, hermione granger is looking absolutely gorgeous in that movie. [: im absolutely intrigued where she got that SO SO cute peacoat. the checked one she wore a lot paired with the scarves.if anyone knows, please drop a line please?! 

for the skyping topic, i just did my very first phone call via skype and it was crystal clear! it was quite funny because shawn absolutely did not know who the hell i was at first so he talked to me in chinese [wei? wei? ni wei?] and im like “its hao you dodo.”. but yes, i am thinking about geting DSL for my house because i figured i’ll be needing to get faster internet for school. it’s an easy argument for me to give to my parents too. they’d rather have me study at home then at the library at UW. haha. but yes, maybeeeee sometime soon i won’t have to wait half an hour to load a MV from Big Bang.

also, night market for seattle is coming up. i’m considering asking my parents if i can volunteer with VSA there since i am now joined as a member. it should be fun and a good way for me to be introduced in with the people. i’m serious about joining too and maybe hopefully becoming an official in the future? VSA is Vietnamese Students Association. Night market is this thing held in the summer in the International District which is basically a mini fair with lots of food vendors and a night movie showing on a big projector set outside. it’s just simple fun.

well, it’s 3:30 am so i will head to sleep now. just packing up tomorrow so nothing so busy. i will definitely miss my late night eating out at taco bell or steak n shake and watching movies. and playing scrabble and upwords [amazingly competitive.] but i’m ready to head home. i can’t wait for school to start!

ya, it’s sun-day

it’s a mighty fine day so far. i washed 2 cars and now we’re about to go biking on alki (or maybe coulon. iono)

i chased down the ice cream van (yes, it was a nissan quest.) and bought my favorite childhood ice cream. the one that i alwasy begged my parents money for but i was too expensive so i always had to deal and get the cheapo fudge bar or whatnot. but it’s the spiderman ice cream. and as a kid, the spiderman ice cream meant you were cool because you got two gumballs to eat (his eyes are gumballs). though today, i ate the gumballs and i spat them out because they’re gross as hell. but who cares. cheers to reminiscing of childhood. ho hum, if only ally was here. i’m itching for some badminton in the street (:

Epik High & F*EM in Seattle !

 

so in anatomy class today, ken comes in and the first thing he says is “are you goin’ to the epik high show?”

Epik High is coming to Seattle to preform on May 23rd at the Kingcat Theatre, located on 6th Avenue.

Like. Oh Em Gee. God this would be one event that I absolutely must ask my parents to go to. I mean, it’s one in a lifetime. And actually, I wanna go to this more than prom (which I have neglected to ask my parents about too). I mean, prom or Epik High in Seattle? EPIK HIGH FOR SURE.

Ken told me that apparently they’re doing autographed copies for the first 25 people (not sure?) and selling their merchandise (of course!) at the show so no shipping and handling payments. I kind of zoned out afterwards because all I could think about were ways to convince my parents. I mean, it’s a one in a million shot of letting me go but mygod. I wish wish wish (this is way more bomb than Wong Fu because Wong Fu is located within the US so if i ever went to California, I could potentially catch one of their shows but Epik High is sadly, an ocean away). 

Speaking of Wong Fu, Far East Movement (of whom WF has made a music video for) is also part of the concert and dude, they rock too! So it’s like a double packaged deal !

Tickets are 25 dollars which is TOTALLY affordable and apparently seating is first come first get in and shove your way to the front and stake a claim. =O

……GAH I WANNA GO SO BAD. KEN’S BUYING TICKETS AND MONA IS GOING TOO! *FOAMS AT MOUTH*

after meticulously looking for jalapeno berry gelato in seattle. i am was disappointed to say that it does not exist. there IS a strawberry jalapeno gelato at a place in Fremont but that’s too far…

Sissy just called, they got a new van. that means i have officially inherited her Maxima. woot woot. now all i  need to do is to get my brother to drive it back up here so i can start learning how to drive. and for nicer weather to come on because i cannot drive in rain when i can’t drive when the sun’s shining anyways.

the week is over. its a nice day. im tired as hell so i basically will spend my weekend sleeping. most likely. then next week, much more stress with csc hwk and whatnot. yay! at least my chem exam went well and im anxious to know what i got.

Seattle weather shows no love.

 

Oh I love my mom. The first thing she says when I walk through the door is “WOOOW YOU’RE NOT WEARING JEANS!”. [: I guess it’s quite amazing, since I never let go of my denim. But cords are okay too. The feel nice against your skin but it attracts lint like crazy.

I’m baaaaack home. Finally. I loved Iowa. I loved being away from my parents and hanging out and being free. But I got a little homesick towards the end. Mom gets lonely without me because she dislikes talking to Dad and she talk to me usually (both a pro and con). I also missed the food as much as I emphasized that I didn’t to my mom. You can only go without fish sauce for so long. =D

Coming back to Seattle, I heard that we’ve been getting amazing gorgeous spectacular fantastic sunshine. Well. Guess what.

It’s cloudy today.

I mean, OMG! Wait until I get back and make it cold and dismal again. And when I was leaving Iowa, it just started getting sunny too. Seriously. What’s up with THAT.
